Transforming Government communication and content

Dan Hon Code for America

The jokes of "Yes Minister" frequently revolve around the Governmental use of language to obfuscate and misdirect, and still resonate today, a quarter of a century or more after it first aired. So, it's not unfair to say that the language Governments have traditionally used to communicate with citizens has hardly been a model of clarity, or of engagement. Obfuscatory, bureaucratic, legalistic, risk averse, Government communication and content, far from being user centric, has focussed on the needs of Government.

But just as user centric approaches to design are bringing change to Government service delivery, new approaches to content and language are changing how Governments communicate.

In this session, Dan Hon, Editorial Director and new advisor-at-large at Code For America, will look at how Governments are using, and can use content strategy to better meet the needs of their citizens.

Dan Hon

Dan Hon is an advisor-at-large and former Editorial Director at Code for America, a non-profit startup working to build government that works for the people, by the people in the 21st century.

Now, he's working with the State of California and the Administration for Children, Youth and Families at the federal Health and Human Services agency to deliver user-centered digital services for child welfare. He’s also working with the Government Operations agency and the Department of Technology at the State of California to build new digital capability across the state.

About Us

Co-founded and now run by John Allsopp, Web Directions has for over a decade brought together leading developers, engineers, visual, IxD, UX and product designers, Art and Creative Directors, indeed everyone involved in producing web and digital products to learn from one another, and the World's leading experts across this vast field.

We spend our lives thinking about what comes next, keeping up with trends in technology, practices and processes, and filtering the hype, to make sure you don't miss trends that matter, and don't waste time on hype that doesn't.

We promise attending one of our events will leave you significantly better versed in the challenges you face day to day, and in solutions for addressing them.

In 2016, we'll be organising Respond in Sydney and Melbourne, Transform in Canberra, Code in Sydney and Melbourne, and Direction in Sydney.
