Year round learning for product, design and engineering professionals

The fastest growing PC segment is a laptop that is purely web tech based

Remember Netbooks? The low priced, highly portable laptops that seemed to be sweeping the world. Until the iPad pretty much destroyed that category of device.

With all the excitement about tablet devices, something interesting has been happening to the humble laptop space.

Chromebooks are now the fastest growing segment in the PC market (I guess if you don’t count tablets as a PC, which given they’re “post-pc” that’s probably fair enough).

So, in a world where we hear time and again how slow and underpowered JavaScript and related web technologies are, this in many ways new platform, which relies entirely on these very technologies, is booming.

You might be thinking the Chromebook will go go way of the netbook. Time will tell. But we think there’s more than a little to Kevin Tofel’s position than there’s more than meets the eye to the ChromeBook.
