Bert Bos summarizes the issues around Webfonts
Bert Bos, co-inventor of CSS, has a detailed summary of the issues around font embedding and standardization from a couple of months back.
Why so much on this of late here? We feel at web directions that this is a development ultimately as significant as the rise of CSS for web design and development. We feel it will usher in a new era of web design innovation, and see us finally rid of various hacks for using fonts that aren’t installed on the end users systems that are plagued with accessibility, usability, performance and maintenance issues.
What puts the “directions” in Web Directions is our goal to keep abreast of developments in our field, and to bring these to you, so you don’t have to read the 500 bogs a day we do – unless you really want to of course.
Some other things on our radar that we’ll be covering in increasing detail
CSS3 and experimental CSS (there’s some very nice developments in that space)
The Geolocation API and location aware applications
Offline Web applications
We’ve got sessions on all these at Web Directions North, and no doubt we’ll be covering them in other events we hold.
Great reading, every weekend.
We round up the best writing about the web and send it your way each Friday.
