The State of the AI Engineering Job Market in Australia
Jake Maloney is the founder of AI Jobs Australia, a job board dedicated to Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, and AI-adjacent emerging roles. That vantage point gives him insight into the Australian market that few others have.
In this session, Jake shares the latest intel on which roles are in demand, what salaries are being offered, where the gaps are, and what employers are really looking for in AI engineering hires.
Jake Maloney
Jake Maloney runs the only job board in Australia dedicated entirely to AI, ML, Data Science and emerging AI roles. He launched AI Jobs Australia in 2025 as a solo dev, and in under a year has grown it to 7,000+ monthly users and hundreds of live AI roles from employers including EY, Kogan and Insignia Financial. Jake got into tech the way a lot of kids did in the 2000s, building little HTML and CSS games in the browser, then websites for friends and family businesses. That curiosity about how things work has stuck around, he started AJA after noticing there was nowhere in Australia properly cataloguing AI roles, despite the search demand. He sees AI as a productivity multiplier, not the doomsday tech the media often portrays, and he’s building AJA to help keep more of Australia’s AI talent in Australia. Outside work, Jake is an avid runner (recently completed his first half marathon) and a year into his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey, where he gets humbled by more experienced training partners on a weekly basis. He’s based in Melbourne.
